Professor Frank Miedema is the dean and vice-chairman of the Medical Center Utrecht (UMC), and was a researcher in the immunology department for twenty-some years. His research mainly focused on the immunology of AIDS. Miedema does not merely watch over the faculty, but is also keen on improving it. He is one of the initiators of Science in Transition, which is a movement that believes that the scientific system is in need of fundamental reform. In this talk, Miedema elaborates on science as a system, and presents a diagnosis of the problem.
